Have you ever gone to the gym and just lagged the entire time you were there?  Did you feel like you probably should have done more but you couldn’t work up the motivation to get those last few lifts in?  You’re not alone.  Most people that workout by themselves tend to start losing steam on the last few reps of a set, as well as at the end of their workout.  They know they could probably do more, but they become tired, mentally, and they can’t seem to bring themselves to their breaking point.

This lack of steam can be addressed by following my latest gym tip: workout with a partner.

By having someone in the gym that can both spot you and also motivate you to keep going farther, you can increase the intensity of your workouts, which leads to increasing your gains.  Your workout partner doesn’t even need to be at the same level as you.  All you need is someone to support you for those last few reps.

If you use a personal trainer, they can do that for you, but don’t think you need a pro to get you to where you need to be.  You just need a friend that’s willing to yell in your face when you start getting lazy!

So true! I have worked out sporadically in the past, however since last July I buddied up with a girlfriend of mine at work. We constantly push one another and our workouts have gone from 2-3 days a week to 4-5. We’re each other’s competition as well as support, as on days I don’t feel like working out she eggs me on, and on days she doesn’t feel like it I taunt her with “come on saddlebags; clearly you NEED to hit the gym” – I have personally dropped 3 sizes since November and I credit this to having a workout buddy! :)

Haha, April, congrats on your progress! I like the taunting… I’m sure it motivates your friend quite a bit. I Imagine she gets back at you every now and then though :)

OH yes…one day she stood at my desk and ate a cookie in front of me (bitch). I ran her ass so hard she could barely see straight. At the end of our 3 miles she was ready to puke. Serves her ass right! LOL
